Fellas,
One
of my favorite things to do at the end of the Hot Stove League season is
to conduct an analysis of how everyone did on Draft Day way back in March,
based on the final points for each player. The following table contains a
breakdown of how each drafting manager did during each five rounds of the
draft, during the final three rounds, and cumulatively, based on gross
points scored by each player drafted during the season. While not a
perfect reflection of the Draft -- for reasons which should be obvious,
and which will no doubt be pointed out by Possum after he reviews the
numbers -- this analysis still gives all of us a pretty good idea of how
we did on Draft Day:

OBSERVATIONS
** |
The Bronx Bombers
knocked them dead during the First Five Rounds, despite drafting
out of the eight-hole, by selecting players who ended up with 3024 gross
points for the season, slightly ahead of the Skipjacks’ second
place performance with 3018. The Irates were an impressive third
with 2923 points, while the Blues brought up the rear with a sorry
total of 1792 points, largely due to Rolen’s injury and Oliver Perez’s
malperformance. The second worst total for the first five rounds belongs
to the Wahoos, with 1860 points, which Possum will of course blame
on unfair injuries to Schilling and Thome. Hey, caveat emptor. You take
old guys, you assume the risk. |
|

** |
During Rounds 6 through
10, Stretch made an impressive comeback, leading the league with 2575
points, largely due to his sage selection of Derek Lee in the 9th round
(761 points) and Bartolo Colon (503) in the 10th. The Redbirds had
the second highest total during this important phase of the Draft, with
2516 points, through the selection of four players who scored more than
500 points apiece. The Tribe did some serious toe-stubbing during
this portion of the Draft (Kerry Wood 155; Armando Benitez 177; Magglio
Ordonez 250; and G. Mota 199), for a dreadful five-round total of only
1216 points, a swoon from which he was unable to recover. The Cubs*
had the second worst output during this part of the Draft with 1495
points, because of Carl Pavano (105), Octavio Dotel (81), and the forcibly
retired Bret Boone (209). |
|
|
** |
After Ten Full Rounds of
the Draft, the Redbirds had the most gross points in the bank
with 5311 points, followed by the Bombers with 5202, far ahead of
the 3rd place and ultimate champion Skipjacks, who had only 4669
points through 10. The Tribe had the fewest points through twelve
rounds with 3518 points, while the Wahoos were only marginally
better with 3663. |
|
|
** |
The Skipjacks came
alive during Rounds 11 through 15 of the Draft, leading the herd
with 2333 points, on the strength of his selections of Pat Burrell (575)
in the 11th and Andy Pettitte (585) in the 13th. The Senators had
the second highest total during this portion of the Draft with 2231
points, while the Wahoos had the third highest total with 2097.
The Redbirds faltered during Rounds 11 through 15 by drafting
players who grossed only 1277 points, largely because of his selection of
Greinke (111), Bagwell (78) and Matsui (163) during these five picks.
Tirebiter’s five-round total was far behind the 11th best performance of
the Reds, who totaled 1608 gross points during this part of the
Draft. |
|
|
** |
Through Fifteen Full
Rounds, Itchie picked players whose gross points totaled 7012 points
while the Bombers’ first fifteen picks carded a total of 6829.
Through fifteen, the Tribe was in dead last with gross player
points totaling 5472, while the Wahoos’ first fifteen players had
the eleventh worst gross points total of 5760. |

** |
U-Bob must have had an epiphany during Rounds 16 through 20, as his
players picked during these five rounds led the entire league with 1794
points, led by his 19th round selection of Raul Ibanez who ended up
scoring 508 points for the season. The Blues also staged a mild
rally during these five rounds, notching a second-highest total of 1774
points, led by Craig Biggio’s 518 points. At the other end of the
spectrum, the Irates slipped badly during Rounds 16 through 20,
totaling only 960 points for the five players picked during this part of
the Draft, with both Bobby Madritsch and Juan Gonzalez scoring
negative 1 points on the year. The Wahoos weren’t much better
during this part of the Draft, totaling only 1004 points for these five
players, including only 62 points from Jimenez and 88 points from Danny
Graves.
Through Twenty Full Rounds of the Draft, Itchie led all comers with
8445 gross points, followed by the Bronx Bombers with 8414 points,
followed by the Redbirds with 8321 points. At the other end, the
Wahoos picked players through 20 rounds whose gross points totaled
on 6764 points, last in the league, and significantly behind the 11th
place Tribe with 7266 gross points. |
|
|
** |
The Chiefs kicked
some serious rear during Rounds 21-25 of the Draft, totaling 2104
gross points, on the strength of Ensberg (573), Eckstein (546) and Cantu
(505 points). Too bad they didn’t stick around on the roster. The
Reds had the second highest total during Rounds 21 through 25 with
1640 points. The Senators faltered badly during Rounds 21 through
25, with the five players selected during this phase totaling only 1062
points. Similarly, the five players picked by the Bombers during
Rounds 21 through 25 totaled only 1095 points. |
|
|
** |
Through Twenty-Five
Rounds of the Draft, believe it or not, the Skipjacks and the
Redbirds were exactly tied in terms of gross points with 9865
points. The Chiefs were third with gross points after 25 with 9842
points, while the Wahoos slipped further behind the field with only
7907. |
|
|
** |
During the Final Three
Rounds of the Draft, the Wahoos finally had some decent picks,
totaling 993 points with Klesko, Batista and Miller, to lead the field.
The Senators were second during these rounds with 917 points, while
the Reds were third with 880 points. The Redbirds had the
fewest points during these three rounds with only 365, with 0 from Upton,
36 from Erickson, and 329 from Matt Morris. |
|
|
** |
Through the Full
Twenty-Eight Rounds of the Draft, the Skipjacks carded the most
gross points with 10714, followed by the Chiefs with 10310,
followed by the Redbirds with 10230, followed by the Bombers
with 10206. The 28 Wahoos players drafted during the Draft had
the fewest gross points, with 8900 points, while the Tribe ended up
in 11th in gross points drafted with 9162. |
EPILOGUE
There are many conclusions which could be drawn from the above
information, and I invite any of you to share yours with me and the rest
of the group. Two things seem completely obviously to me, however: One,
Itchie again picked a whale of a team on Draft Day, and then managed not
to screw it up too much by overmanaging during the course of the season;
and two, the Wahoos picked an absolutely dreadful team on Draft
Day, arguably the worst in the league, but through savvy management
throughout the season, including spending a great deal of time in U-Bob’s
back alley picking up castaways off the scrap heap pile, he was able to
manage his team to an almost-respectable 8th place finish.
See
you around.
